June 21st 2014

Chi-Chimaun Festival Tour
By Dave Allen

Saturday June 21 2014 was the date for the Grey/Bruce Chapter's tour up to Tobermory or the "TUB" as locals call it. We attended this great festival in 2013 as a group for the first time and enjoyed it immensley. There are many unique businessess around the harbour, boat charter companies, gift shops, restaurants, snack bars, clothing shops and more. The festival itself was to have a ball tournament, parade, beer tent, dog party and skills competition and much more. The big draws are the car and boat show and the boat races. The rules for the boat races are simple, only armstrong power and they can only be made of cardboard and duct tape. The results are hilarious.

We met at Balluchon's Cafe for breakfast and proceeded from there to the festival. A decision had to be made between rocketing up Hwy 6 to arrive as soon as possible at the festival or to take a more leisurely tact and tour some of the back roads and arrive later. We chose the latter, later. The drive was very pleasant, it took us along winding back roads, over small bridges, through little villages and alongside the lake for some strethches. We eventually found ourselves back at the highway and proceeded north to our destination.

We made our way up Hwy 6 for several miles before encountring stopped traffic where a 5 car accident had occured. After talking to several people who were also held up and waiting for some time I walked about a half mile up the road to where the stoppage was. I found two policemen and asked if they had any idea how long the holdup (bad word choice) traffic stoppage would be. One said not very long, maybe 15 minutes, the other said it would be a long time. I walked back to the group, gave them the news and we decided to head back down to Lion's Head Inn for refreshments. Cold beer and food went down well and we broke up and proceeded home.

Despite not making the festival we had a very enjoyable day, good company and a very pleasant tour through the Bruce Peninsula on the kind of roads our cars were made for. Hopefully we can do this again in June 2015.
