October 3rd 2015

Cinderella's Carriage Classic Car Show
@
Port Elgin's Pumpkin Fest 2015

Words and Pictures by Robert Ockenden

Cloudy, gusty north wind, and about 10°C degrees, (50°F degrees), and yet they came, large numbers of spectators and drivers with their special automobiles.

These folks had no illusions about being in California.

This is Canada alright, but the weather could not dampen their spirits! And no, it didn’t rain, though it has snowed in the past just to celebrate the event, one of Ontario’s biggest late-season two-day outdoor car shows and freezeathons.

Despite the weather, they came from all over, one from much further north - Engelhard, (used to work at "Bruce Nuke" I think), while others were from closer by - Godrich, Orillia, Barrie, and even many from the balmy south below Highway #7 (double entendre on the "balmy" right?) - London, Brantford, Sarnia, maybe even some from T.O.!

On Saturday October 3 our group arrived in "Port" together after meeting for a leisurely breakfast in downtown Burgoyne. It’s amazing, but on the 2 lane road from Burgoyne to Port we managed to stay pretty much together for the 3 - 4 mile drive! The entry fee of $15 bucks was a little steep, but it did cover both days, if anyone was brave enough to return for another dose on Sunday! Turned out though, that after an early morning drizzle, Sunday was warmer at 12°C, (almost 53°F), with no wind.

Well represented were numerous "modified" light commercial vehicles

with the usual ’57 Chevys, lots and lots of honest-to-goodness hot rods

Finally, Ellie’s and my, "Lilly", (a Lady doesn’t like to disclose her age).

Many in alligator pose. Crocodile? No alligator.* (Well, people always want to see the engine, but perhaps Dave and Michael were shy or just didn’t want to let the mice out!)

While some of us were off checking out the dollars spent on some of the rigs there, Dave A. took pictures of the mobs who centred around our group’s LBCs! I suspect those mighty A Series engines displayed ‘neath our open hoods, (sorry ex-pats, "bonnets"), were responsible for drawing so many admirers to our cars.

We contend that only Bob Thompson’s beautiful ‘31 Rolls and fabulous 1915 Cadillac, (special invite to ’15 Cobble Beach’s Cadillac Day), enjoyed larger crowds! I tried to get pictures of Bob’s cars but too many folks were in the way.

Late in the afternoon, exhausted by the cold, wind, and myriads of questions, we gradually departed one at a time, very happy with our reception at our area’s largest car show.
