Cape Cold to Cape Hot

Richard Pape never let anything hold him back. As one of a three man crew of a Stirling Bomber he was shot out of the sky by Nazis over Holland in 1941.

He did his duty as a prisoner of war. His job was to escape and tie up as many of German troops as he could. Apparently he did this well and often.

Having written a book on his war time adventures, Boldness Be My Friend, in 1953 he still had adventure in him.

He then came up with a plan to drive from North Cape, Norway to Capetown South Africa in a 2.6 litre Austin A90 saloon.

With the Austin purchased and fitted out with a bit more cargo racks and bush bumpers, Pape and his navigator took off to the North Cape. Apparently Pape was a bit of a pain in the ass to be with for any length of time and his navigator left, went to the nearest dealer and bought a Renault Dauphine vowing to race Pape to the Cape.

His next co-driver became seriously ill on the drive from North Cape, at Gibraltar. Knowing he would not be allowed to cross North Africa alone he managed to convince a young flight sergent to leave without permission to go with him. They were arrested after a massive military search, but not before crossing the Sahara.

With the use of gile and false documents Richard Pape made it to Cape Town.

A Sports Car That Never Saw the Light of Day

From a post to the Jensen Forum:

Jensen`s Chief of Body Design, Eric Neale submitted this design as tendered by the new BMC for the next generation of Austin sports car.

This car still survives, check out the post.

With a bit more searching I found one small tiny picture of a convertible prototype. I do not know the status of this car. All I could find was one small picture with a description at ARO Online. It does show a bit more "└ustin" styling.

The Convertible prototype

Neither of the cars could not be ready for the Earl`s Court Motor Show. Unfortunately for Jensen, Donald Healey had his car at the show, where it was seen with a deal made to produce before that show ended. The Austin Healey was born.

I Want Stuff

Baby Pictures

Find pictures showing you with your new car. Past or present, it does not matter. If you only have pictures of the car, when new(ish), find them too.

Favourite Tour Routes

Most of us have our cars for driving. We have routes from country back roads to windy river and escarpment roads.

Send me your favourite tour routes. I'll do my best to map them out and put them up.
