Is a Ford Van In the Hand
Worth
A Driving Somerset?

Bruce Clark

Good Bye Big Ford

I found the first of my Austins within a few blocks from my home, here in Alberta.

Right from the start I had problems. Towing it home the front bumper brackets broke allowing the tow bar to let go. Here I am with a car that wants to wander into the curb and stay. A friend of mine was home so I unhooked the car from my SUV and picked him up to help me get the Somerset home. Lucky for us there were no cops patrolling the area as we had to resort to using a chain (there was nothing left to attach the tow bar to).

It must have looked interesting with me in the Austin being towed along the street as we got quite a few thumbs up ( I think some of it was my sitting on the floor of it steering looking pretty much between the dash and the steering wheel like some little old lady)

We also got lucky with both the train tracks and the traffic lights as the little car has no brakes. The train had just pulled through the intersection as we rounded a bend and we didn't have to stop, the light turned green as we were about a half block away and stayed until we were past it. Needless to say we were both breathing a sigh of relief when we pulled into my yard.

My second Somerset was a lot less dramatic getting home. I traded the Ford E250 Funcraft camper, pictured above, for the Austin. The trader delivered it when he came to pick up the van.

I'm still looking forward to getting Somerset no.3 home, it's sitting in Edmonton, about an hour and a half away from here. I'm sure that next week will be more challenging as I get it home using either a tow dolly or a flat trailer.

Hero Land's End to John O'Groats 2013

This last weekend the Historic Endurance Rallying Organization, HERO, held the 19th edition of the LeJog Rally. Over the four days of this event there were all weather conditions found at all times of day. To get the full experience there are long evening and night stages.

I Want Stuff

Baby Pictures

Find pictures showing you with your new car. Past or present, it does not matter. If you only have pictures of the car, when new(ish), find them too.

Favourite Tour Routes

Most of us have our cars for driving. We have routes from country back roads to windy river and escarpment roads.

Send me your favourite tour routes. I'll do my best to map them out and put them up.
