Can You Name That Car?

Steve Favill was the first back to me last week. This is a Singer Hunter. For the years 1954, '55, and '56 this was the descendant of the Singer SM1500. With the takeover by the Rootes Group, it was relegated to history, and the used car lot.

Singer & Co. was founded by George Singer in 1875, who was at the helm until his death in 1888. Singer & Co. started building bicycles, which grew into motorcycles and by 1905 their first automobile.

The first Hunters were cosmetic facelifts of the SM1500 for a more modern look. The cosmetics included, for a short time, a glass fibre bonnet and front wings. If you noticed this in last week's picture, kudos to you. Cosmetics also included a horse on the radiator cap. Mechanically the car was unchanged from the SM1500 except for some engine modifications.

Singer and HRG developed a Twin-Overhead cam engine for the future Hunter 75. The Rootes Group takeover ended production of this new car in favour of the new Gazelle model. There may have been 20 Hunter 75s built.

If you want a Singer Hunter, and can't find one you can buy a diecast of it. There are clubs on both sides of the Atlantic, The North American Singer Owners Club, and the Association of Singer Car Owners.

Here is the current car as chosen by Steve Favill! I don't know if these, or their predecessors were imported to Canada or not. Enlighten me if you can!

Downtown Toronto Brit Car Dealerships

I have been trying to recall the name of a dealership in Toronto late 1960's, around Davenport Road, Bay Street, Toronto. They sold Jaguar, mini minor, cooper, so on. My father took my there to look at buying a car (although I didn't).

Do you recall this dealership??
much appreciated if you do.

Baby Pictures

Find pictures showing you with your new car. Past or present, it does not matter. If you only have pictures of the car, when new(ish), find them too.

Favourite Tour Routes

Most of us have our cars for driving. We have routes from country back roads to windy river and escarpment roads.

Send me your favourite tour routes. I'll do my best to map them out and put them up.
