Can You Name That Car?

This last week's stumper was a Daimler DN250. Alan Brand and Jim Ellis, after a bit, guessed correctly.

In the 50s cash strapped Daimler looked to the American market for their cars. Daimler developed a a 2.5l engine but needed somewhere to put it. Design work started on the Dart, which made its debut at the 1959 New York Motor Show.

The saloon was another matter, requiring much more in development money. At first the new engine was destined for the Conquest Century but it was getting a bit long in the tooth as American styling flew beyond tall cars with separate fenders and engine shroud. The next idea was to put the engine into an existing vehicle, the Vauxhall Cresta PA. It fit fine.

Work was undertaken to develop the Cresta body with Daimler styling, inside and out, with improved suspension and stopping ability.

Styling development was pretty much completed, and a prototype may have been constructed, no one knows for sure. This work came to a crashing end when Jaguar took possession of Daimler in May of 1960. Jaguar stated, before the takeover, that current models and development would continue. Daimler very quickly went on to be a badge engineered Jaguar.

Devoted fan, Roderick Ramage, built his own DN-250 based on the drawings and photographs available, of which there were few. The car chosen by him was a different year of Cresta, but it was a rolling chassis. He did not want to mess with a complete car.

He does have a site, but all of the pictures seem to be missing. Members of the Rods 'n' Sods forum have gone in digging to get the pictures I have here. There is a better read here, by Roderick, from the 2012 August-September Issue of the Daimler & Lanchester Owners' Club New Zealand newsletter.

Here is this week's mystery car sent in by Alan Brand. I don't know if many of these came to our side of the Atlantic. If anybody knows please let me know.

Baby Pictures

Find pictures showing you with your new car. Past or present, it does not matter. If you only have pictures of the car, when new(ish), find them too.

Favourite Tour Routes

Most of us have our cars for driving. We have routes from country back roads to windy river and escarpment roads.

Send me your favourite tour routes. I'll do my best to map them out and put them up.
